I'm completely drooling over 944s tonight. Talk me out of it, oppo. Tell me of all the maintenance nightmares and general unreliability. Tell me about how I'll kick myself for not going with an S or turbo.

Or just tell me that $3450 for a later 944 is one heck of a deal. Either way, really...

Aaron Brown and I have been searching for a good 944 for about 1500$ for his first car. They're super cool cars. You can probably get a nice 944 for 3450$ and as with any car maintenance is necessary. I have heard from Aaron that only the S models/DOHC engines are unreliable, but thats all I have heard and I don't buy into the description unreliable, I always want to know WHAT makes it unreliable. I don't think they are unreliable.

$1500 for a driving 944? That sounds insane. I think they've gone up in value somewhat recently. I couldn't find a "good" 944 for less than $6k. This one I found for $3450 has a broken odometer (no problem) and needs "a mount" and rear shocks.

Or you could get an FC. Its a lot like a 944, only less reliable, and harder to do maintenance on. But hell, who doesn't love a challenge...

Haha, true, but I'd rather have the Porsche. I nearly bought a decent 911 for $7k four years ago and backed out on the deal and have kicked myself for it ever since. So I kind of have a vendetta to own a reasonable Porsche.

Well we have found some cars that are a notch under "decent". As a first car for a 17 year old for him it doesn't have to be amazing, but running 944's in need of TLC can be had for about 1500 around here. Where are you located? I think they may be in their appreciation phase, finally entering the "classic" field in the car market. Anyhow, project cars are the best cars.

I'd disagree for a first car. He'd be better off getting something reasonable. For instance, my first car was my '96 Grand Prix coupe, and even though it's FWD, automatic, and '90s GM, I still love the thing to this day, despite sampling better things in the intervening years. I really would advocate for getting something easier to just use as daily transportation and have the cheap 944 as a second car. That's what I'm doing with mine. Selling my second car, the Audi 90 Quattro 20V, and getting this. Or at least that's the plan if it checks out mechanically.

Edit: To answer your question, I'm located in northern Indiana.

Honestly I have no idea why he would spend money on a car when there's a perfectly good MK2 golf sitting in his driveway that he doesn't want. Idk. Reasonable isn't fun however ;)

Haha, well maybe. I guess the point I was making is that reasonable CAN be fun. I've had a lot of fun and memories in my GP. But anyway, yeah, why won't he take that Golf? I would.

Again, I'd highly advise getting into something decently reliable before meddling in the dark arts of German automotive maintenance. If you actually have to count on it to get you somewhere and back again, you'll want a back up. Just in case.

Damn 7K? At that price I assume it was a mid 70's Targa top?

And yeah, I was mostly kidding about the FC, the 944 is a great car. I only got to drive one once, but they feel incredibly light and toss-able. I'd say at that price, if it is a good example, go for it.

Yeah me too, now you get to find out what my car is from the other post, I have a 99 ML320 with 208,000 miles on it, and I love it. I saved it from certain death after my father neglected it and gave up on it.

The thing is, he doesn't actually really NEED a car, since we both live in the city, its more of a project towards getting a decent car. In NYC you really don't need a car. I pay 200$ a month out of my own pocket to park my car slightly outside of the city so that I can use it to escape this concrete hell.

And yeah, I'd take the golf too, it has potential to be cool. Shame it's an auto, but still it has potential. Another thing with german cars is the parts tend to be very expensive...at least my ML, parts are pretty expensive.

You know your values. :D It was a black '77 Targa.

Well, my uncle owned one for a while (a '76 if I remember correctly) so that helps my knowledge of earlier 911s and their values. He let me take it out for a drive a few weeks after I got my driver's license, that thing scared the hell out of me :)

damn fun cars if i do say so. bought one in high school for 800 bucks. really regret selling it. watch the timing belt and keep up with the oil and other maintenance. also remember to drive the absolute bejesus out of it. they last longer that way.

"Sleeper 924" with 944 engine. $1800. You have a lot of choices. Step carefully. Do you at least.. (sees Audi avatar) okay, you know German quirks.

Hard to tell, around here in a odd market, the range is from $1000 for a parts car to $6800 for a one owner nicey nicey. It's mostly interpreting the description to see if they have a clue.

This listing is an example of 'perhaps not'

I saw a 944 the other day.

It had broken down while making a right turn at an intersection. CAA was in attendance, working on one of the wheels with a five-foot jack.

"Busted control arm?" I said to myself, as I squeezed by the car, "Shitty."

As a child of the 80's, I've always loved the 944. But as it's a "poor man's Porsche" it tends to be bought by people who can't afford to maintain them, and want a cheap way to buy the badge. Caveat emptor .

P.S. Looked like it was a vanilla 944, not the S or Turbo.

The good thing is, I don't have to! Thanks to NYC's wonderful MTA transit system. I just really want something to call my own, and that I can use when I really feel the need to escape this hell hole. I (probably) won't use it to get to school or anything like that, and I'm not even sure that I'd park it at home/in the city.

Yeah, it is hard finding a decent 944 for around $1500, and if I was more patient, I could probably get more money to use towards it, and increase my budget. But I'm not patient.

ALSO: As for 944 reliability, of course I have no first hand experience. But from what I hear on the web, the later S model had a few issues and the DOHC was unreliable. Personally, I prefer the interior design of the earlier models, so that's what Im trying to look for. Other common issues I hear about are cooling, fuel pump, and front end issues.

Just wait until you can afford to buy and maintain a 928.
